-=Hawke's outside today, squaring off with his Lockjaw. They both stare at each other, both unmoving as something unheard by the general public actually sets Hawke off. As the Lockjaw watches, Hawke attempts to practice something like this with the animal as a partner of sorts.=-

I have not had troubles with dance before. -=Hawke doesn't look entirely pleased with this as he tries to work on 'lifting' on the balls of his feet.=- There is little dancing. Not the way I learned it. It is...posturing like great birds do.

-=A turn, holding his arm out, and a :/ expression on his face.=- There truly is nothing more than this to dance? You do not truly touch another. There is no holding one close and sharing with their breath. It is... hopping on feet very slowly.

-=Yeah, that little flutter of his feet for a dance step? He executes it well enough, but he feels silly.=-

There will be other dances at this party, yes? Please?

-=Oh, he wasn't going to let go of her hands.=-

Guide me. I learn better while doing things.

As you like.

[She smiles, then lets go of his right hand, to gather her skirts in her left, lifting them up above the ankle so he could see the steps while they practiced. His left hand, she raises to near eye level.]

We begin thus.

[And she leads him through the steps of the dance she had seen him attempting before, slowly at first, and then faster, and with livelier movements.]

-=He's definitely uncertain as he starts and it takes him a good while before he feels remotely comfortable with it. He's all embarrassed grins as he moves with her.=-

[She is grinning the entire time as well, remembering how long it took her to master the steps, and how long it had taken Tybalt.]

You are learning very quickly. Far more quickly than I did when I began my lessons.

You flatter me, Juliet. -=He ducks his head a little, smiling.=-

[She finds that rather endearing.]

I do nothing of the sort. I speak the truth. It took weeks for me to learn proper dancing. I think if Tybalt had not been so adamant, and so tolerant of my mistakes, I would have given it up and declared myself better fit for a convent than a ball.

Mayhaps it is because of the people I was raised with. Adapting is important.

Perhaps. Adapting is important for anyone, is it not? We none of us could survive here if we were incapable of adapting to the oddness of it.

Or perhaps you are simply a natural dancer, like my cousin.

I do not know. Mayhaps. -=He's just happy to be in Juliet's company, dancing or not.=-

And what think you of the dance, now that you have had a more attentive partner with whom to practice? Is it still posturing to your eyes?

[She's been adding some of her favorite embellishments to the steps as they've practiced - ones she's danced with Romeo, and ones she's made certain never to do when forced to dance with Count Paris, in hopes he wouldn't find it quite so dull.]

It is a language that I am still learning. -=Yes he still considers it not true dancing, but he has noticed the little things she's added.=-

I did enjoy my partner very much.

As with any language, it will take much practice to learn and appreciate fully. And this is but one passage, if we are to continue the metaphor. There are many others, some of which may be more to your tastes.

[And now it's her turn to duck her head.]

I am glad.

-=He moves to stand before her, lifting her chin.=-

I will work very hard to learn well.

It is most kind of you to do so, Hawke. I am honored that you would.

I am honored that you would teach me. Now. -=He smiles and playfully nuzzles her temple.=-

What is next?

Would you like to learn a different dance to the one we had been practicing, or would you like to try that dance again?

[Of course, you're likely to distract her if you keep that sort of thing up.]

Different dance. -=He brings his cheek lower to then nibble on her earlobe. He's trying to be persuasive.=-

[Her eyes fall shut at that, and she lifts her hand to his cheek, caressing it for a moment before she makes herself step back.]

That sort of thing will not lead to dancing, and you know it.

It is dancing to me. -=Another nibble as his arm winds around Juliet's waist to pull her close.=-

[She lets herself be pulled back, lifting a hand and placing it on his shoulder. She slides her other hand along his arm and takes his free hand with her own, threading her fingers through his. As tempting as the distraction is, he has asked for lessons. And she would be a poor teacher were she to give in so easily to distraction.]

If you will indulge me and let me lead for a moment?

-=But distracting is a very fun game! He relents, smiling a bit as he looks back to her.=-

Lead.

[Oh, she wouldn't deny that it's fun. But it would defeat the purpose of the lesson.]

This is faster than the other dance, I will warn you, but there is more physical contact than the previous dance. Typically, the gentleman leads, but as you do not know the steps yet....

[And she begins, leading with her right foot, taking him round the yard.]

[OOC: Much like some of the dancing here, which is from the French version of the musical.]

-=It's definitely livelier, and because of that he has to pay more attention to his footing. There are several times where he asks to repeat something so that he can get the steps right, but in all he's having a great time.=-

[She is happy to repeat the steps as many times as he needs. She is dancing, and dancing with one for whom she holds great affection. She is grinning, cheeks flushed, as they go over the dance again and again.]

Would you like to try leading this time?

Yes, I would! -=He works slowly, but once he has a little more confidence, he picks up the pace.=-
