-=He rests a hand on the lockjaw's face as the animal groans happily. The portion that's scarred does not have teeth on the gum line, but he doesn't appear to be in pain.=-
The wound is old and healed. I worry at times that the skin will not stretch well. And [Darkling] likes the attention. -=A long tongue snakes out to lick at Hawke's leg.=-
[ That calms him; he hauls the bag closer with one last heave and nods. ] I'm glad it weren't nothin' recent, then. [ He knew how quickly things changed here. ]
Quite a lot, indeed, I might say! [ He smiles a little as he speaks, ] I've had quite a long walkabout the city, with quite a many things with me, Mister Hawke.
[ For a very quick moment, Sam doesn't understand what Hawke means, before he remembers his bag at his side. ] Oh, well. It's... it's most often out of habit that I bring it along with me, you understand, but somethin' else's brought it out today. [ Sam knows that the notion is likely quite silly, but he simply feels safer when he walks around with supplies. He reaches for his pack and flips the top open. ]
You see, [ He tugs the lip down, peering inside, before looking back up, ] today's been my birthday, Mister Hawke.
-=He brightened at the explanation.=- It is! I wish you well on your birthday. You have been giving gifts? -=He seemed to recall Frodo mentioning that when Hawke offered food to others for his birthday.=-
I have been! [ He looks up, smiling brightly, before turning down and rummaging through his own supplies. ] It's taken quite a while, but near all's done now...
[ Sam trails as he becomes more involved in rummaging through his pack; he lifts himself up onto his toes, nose wrinkling, and sticks his head inside. ]
[ Sam rummages about a little longer, before retreating, brow furrowed in slight aggravation. He pulls down the lip of the bag and looks up to Hawke. ]
I'll... need to quite beg your pardon, Mister Hawke. [ He sniffs, looks back down in the bag and pulls up spare clothing and various other supplies. ] I've somethin' here for you, if I might just find it...
[ He rummages a bit more, cursing under his breath, and looks up at Hawke. ]
Most that it's just what's always been done, sir. I'm not sure I've the right of how it started being that way.
[ Of course, Sam knew well that it goes beyond simple tradition. He looks back into his bag, shuffling his things around as he speaks; ] We Hobbits is rather given to giving gifts, if you follow my meanin'. Most how it's done at home with them Big Folk is they're given gifts by everyone else... [ He cuts himself off, peers into his bag, and tugs something, before continuing, ] I like better to give gifts then have 'em, myself. Few better ways to spend my birthday then makin' others happy, I should think.
[ He searches for a little bit longer, and pulls out some spare clothing. He looks inside with careful eyes. ] Ah! [ Sam reaches in and gingerly pulls something free. He steps back from his pack with a shoulder-bag; something of a large size, patched and stitched and cleaned to the best of Samwise's ability. The strap has clearly been replaced by an old, leather belt, and Sam's added some cloth padding to the shoulder. He dusts off the bag and looks to Hawke sheepishly. ]
I'd might beg your pardon, Mister Hawke. It's... not all so impressive...
-=His whole face lights up as he reaches for it.=-
You made this? -=Because to Hawke, it's impressive. Not many knew how to make things from scratch and this piece showed resourcefulness and ingenuity. And very much needed.=-
I have needed a new one. The one I have now is old and better for cleaning than holding things. I thank you.
[ The brightness in Hawke's face heartens him; he was unsure about his gift. Sam thought food might have been more fitting for Hawke, and of more use, but he hadn't wanted to dip into their own supplies to make anything. ]
Well, in part, leastwise... [ He can't exactly claim credit for the whole thing, of course. ] Just that I sewn it up... and cleaned it.
[ Sam smiles, ducking his head as Hawke bows. Before Sam can respond, Hawke takes him into a hug; there's only brief hesitation before Samwise returns it to the best of his abilities. ]
Quite welcome indeed, Mister Hawke. [ The smile can be heard in his voice. ] Glad I had the right of it.
